Tenured faculty at Governors State University (GSU) undergo post-tenure reviews at least every four year. At the choice of the faculty member, that review could be in the form of application for Promotion to Full Professor, Professional Advancement Increase (PAI), or of a simpler post-tenure review within a process that encourages and recognizes continued excellent performance. Either way, tenured faculty at GSU have to continuously demonstrate that they are performing their job at the expected level of excellence.

Post-tenure reviews cover the prior four-years and the evaluation is done by both the corresponding Division Chair and Dean. Reviews for Promotion to Full Professor or PAI follow the same process as Tenure reviews. They include reviews by faculty (from both Division and the University), and administrators (Chair, Dean, Provost, and President). However, these reviews cover a period of three or more years depending on how long it has been since the prior promotion was granted

A normal post-tenure review does not provide any salary increase. Salary increases arise primarily from annual increases agreed in the University Professionals of Illinois (UPI) – Governors State University agreement, promotions, and PAIs.
