I study what happens to human judgment when information technology mediates it. That question has taken me from videoconferencing and the digital divide to accounting information systems, and most recently to generative artificial intelligence: who is credited for machine-assisted work, whose wages it displaces, and how universities govern a technology their faculty adopted before anyone wrote the policy.
I have taught in nine countries and published in Management Science and the Journal of the Association for Information Systems. Before the academy, I spent fourteen years building the systems I now write about.
Artificial intelligence is reshaping higher education and work at the same time, and the two are the same problem seen from opposite ends. I study what happens to curricula when the skills they certify are automated, which occupations are destroyed and which are created, and who appropriates the value that results.

I also study what these systems can be trusted to do in practice, from grading academic work to detecting objects in aerial imagery, and where their reliability breaks down.
